Project World Class (PWC) is something I came up with to keep me focused and to track my progress.
My ultimate goal is to achieve a "World Class" rating (a PR of 5.0 or below) in my 7-point matches against Extreme Gammon. That goal is a long way off (my PR as I write this is about 8) and I'm not the most disciplined person, so my plan is to set short term goals that isolate certain parts of the game and build on them over time.
Here's the big picture:
Phase 1: Focus on DMP (Double Match Point) games until my PR is 5.0.
Phase 2: Focus on Money games until my PR is 5.0
Phase 3: Focus on GS (Gammon-Save) play until my PR is 5.0
Phase 4: Focus on GG (Gammon-Go) play until my PR is 5.0
Phase 5: Focus on 3a2a (3-away; 2-away) scores until my PR is 5.0.
And so on...
Each phase will build on those that came before. For example, when I move on to Money games, I'll be looking for cases where the best play is different than at DMP. This should give me a better feel for the effect of gammons and the cube.
I'll be tweaking this as I go, trying to keep the focus narrow and my goals realistic. There will be sub-components of each phrase. For example, I'll need to learn all the openings and responses for the given score, I'll need to memorize take points and gammon values, and so on.
This will certainly be a long, slow process, and there's a better than good chance that I'll never reach my ultimate goal. But it helps to have a firm destination in mind, and at least a general idea of how to get there. I'll report on my progress and flesh out the details on the blog as they become relevant.
Stay tuned...
